Film. Music. TV. Life. My name is Jo, and this is my pop culture perspective
Welcome to my movie database, an ongoing project to list every film I've ever seen. Originally I created it with lofty aspirations to provide a mini review of each, but for now I will just link to those which I've actually reviewed on my blog.
About A Boy
From the directors of the American Pie trilogy (Weitz brothers) and author of High Fidelity (Nick Hornby). Darker than advertised, somewhat heartwarming. Hugh Grant is much more likeable as a disheveled sourpuss. Toni Collette, Rachel Weisz. 2002.
About Adam
Decent little indie. Kate Hudson before the hype. Irish sisters fight over a boy. Stuart Townsend (aka Charlize Theron's beau). 2000.
About Last Night
Directed by Edward Zwick, who later produced Shakespeare in Love, Traffic, and The Last Samurai, among others. Script by David Mamet. Rob Lowe, Jim Belushi, Demi Moore, Elizabeth Perkins. 1986.
About Schmidt
Disappointing and a tad dull. I expected more from helmer Alexander Payne, who also brought us Sideways, Election and Citizen Ruth. Jack Nicholson without a hairbrush, Kathy Bates without clothing. Dermot Mulroney, Hope Davis. 2002.
Absence of Malice
Sydney Pollack film. Quality story and performances. Paul Newman, Sally Field. 1981.
Absolute Power Underrated political drama directed and starring Clint Eastwood. Screenplay by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy, Misery, The Princess Bride). Laura Linney, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris. 1997.
Ace Ventura, Pet Detective
Jim Carrey in the first of the two silly pictures. Funny to those who can stand his rubber face and energy. Courtney Cox, Sean Young. Also stars NFL quarterback Dan Marino and rapper Tone Loc! 1994.
Ace Ventura, When Nature Calls
Sequel to film above. Boring co-stars. 1995.
The Accidental Tourist
Small, quiet feel with talented cast. Geena Davis, Kathleen Turner and William Hurt, directed by Lawrence Kasdan (Body Heat, The Big Chill). 1988.
Across The Tracks
Bland, predictable story with poor acting. Notable only because of a young Brad Pitt and a more grown up Ricky Schroder. 1991.
Adaptation
Clever script, great performances by Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper and Nicholas Cage. Director/actor Spike Jonze and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) previously collaborated on Being John Malkovich. 2002.
The Addams Family
No explanation needed. Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christina Ricci. 1991.
Addicted To Love
Decent dark comedy starring Matthew Broderick, Kelly Preston, Meg Ryan. Written by Robert Gordon, who later wrote the hysterical sci-fi farce Galaxy Quest. Directed by actor Griffin Dunne, who also directed Practical Magic. 1997.
Adventures in Babysitting
Known for two major debuts: Elisabeth Shue for acting, Chris Columbus for directing (who moved on to Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire, among others). 1987.
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension
Campy space flick with surprisingly good cast: Peter Weller, John Lithgow, Ellen Barkin and Jeff Goldblum. Directed by W.D. Richter, who thankfully went on to write the screenplay for Jodie Foster's Home for the Holidays. 1984.
The Adventures of Ford Fairlane
Andrew Dice Clay. Need I say more? Ok, it was directed by Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger). 1990.
Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
In a word: fabulous! The film where America discovered Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce, albeit in drag. Terence Stamp alone is worth the price of admission. 1994.
Aeon Flux
Interesting glimpse of the future, but poor acting and a thin story diminish the otherwise aesthetically pleasing film. This would have been a great vehicle for Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen, but Charlize Theron and the relatively unknown Marton Csokas simply go through the motions in this big screen adaptation of the popular MTV animation series. Directed by Karyn Kusama (Girlfight), with a very random appearance by Frances McDormand. 2005.
Against All Odds
Against the Ropes
Yikes. What happened to Meg Ryan? Poor script and overacting. Reminds me that both the story and boxing scenes from the first Rocky are pretty damn good. Omar Epps, Charles Dutton, Tony Shalhoub. 2004.

I love almost all of Pedro Almodovar's films. He transforms beautifully twisted and heartwarming tales into wonderful movies like no one else. I am not a fan of Penelope Cruz in American movies, but she is tolerable in this. Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. 1999.

Alan Ball, who went on to bless our small screens with Six Feet Under, won the Oscar for writing this spectacularly acted and imaginative film. I never tire of watching this movie; it is alternatively disturbing and beautiful. Directed by Sam Mendes. 1999.

One of my favorite foreign films of all time. Essentially this is a story about family, and what that comes to mean to generations of women in a small Dutch village. Directed by Marleen Gorris. Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. 1995.

As Good As It Gets
James L. Brooks, who directed this film, has produced and/or written many of my favorite dialogue-heavy and character-driven movies (Spanglish, Jerry Maguire, The War of the Roses, Say Anything). Although both Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt won Oscars for their performances, Greg Kinnear breaks your heart and steals the show. I wasn't convinced that Hunt was capable of being a big screen presence, but this movie changed my mind. It's too bad that she's virtually disappeared since. 1997.

My hands-down favorite in Christopher Guest's trilogy (Waiting for Guffman and A Mighty Wind are the other two). Laugh out loud funny every single time, you don't even have to be a dog person to appreciate the insanity behind the scenes of obsessive show dog owners. Guest and Eugene Levy co-wrote the movie, which features the same basic talented ensemble cast from his other films. A good deal of the film was improvised, which I'm sure was due in part to their canine co-stars. 2000.

Mark Walhberg hasn't been as good in any movie since. He convincingly plays a porn star version of himself, and is helped by a fantastic supporting cast (William H. Macy, Don Cheadle, Julianne Moore, Heather Graham, Burt Reynolds, John C. Reilly, Luis Guzman). Although I may never get past the image of Marky Mark in his Calvins, Wahlberg has since earned my respect as executive producer of Entourage, which is obviously loosely based on his own experiences in the industry. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. 1997.

Why on earth have so few people seen this film? It is a clever comedy, and there are some hysterical wink-wink moments (such as not-so-veiled jabs at Scientology). Eddie Murphy shines in his roles as twin brothers, and even Heather Graham elicits a few laughs. Written by and co-starring Steve Martin, with Christine Baranaski, Jamie Kennedy. The only three movies featuring Heath Ledger I’ve ever liked? 10 Things I Hate About You, Lords of Dogtown and Monster’s Ball. This movie will change his career and everyone’s opinion about him as an actor. He gives one of the best and most memorable performances in a long time, and really stands out in a year with very few obvious Best Actor choices. Ledger’s tortured cowboy, Ennis Del Mar, is complex and raw; virtually all of his emotions unfold through his eyes and body language. His forbidden love for Jake Gyllenhaal is heart-wrenching and entirely palpable. Surprisingly strong supporting turns by Michelle Williams (The Station Agent, Dawson’s Creek) and Anne Hathaway (The Princess Diaries), both of whom show more flesh than the cowboys in love. Beautiful cinematography and direction from Ang Lee, with a great screenplay adaptation from Terms of Endearment author Larry McMurtrey based on an E. Annie Proulx short story. 2005.

If I were to make a list of men who might be capable of miraculously altering my sexual orientation, Ben Affleck wouldn't even make the top 100. Unfortunately, this isn't the only film to subject us to Affleck's heterosexual superpowers (Gigli). He ruins an otherwise entertaining movie with occasional clever dialogue and banter. One word: intense. The dialogue is incredibly, painfully honest and Mike Nichols is one hell of a director. The ensemble cast lives up to the hype. I am in awe of Natalie Portman in 2004; first Garden State, and now this. Jude Law is clearly the weakest link of the four stars in this film, but I prefer watching his misery onscreen to his overrated charm. Clive Owen has been quietly climbing the Hollywood ladder with high quality independent films, but this one should propel him to the top rung. When Julia Roberts doesn't smile, she's a better actress. She is entirely compelling in every scene. 2004.

Kevin Costner's best film, without question. Make fun of the guy all you want, but he directed the hell out of this movie. His acting is always criticized, but he was doing something right in this one - we forgot he was Costner for over two hours. Getting the movie made was a labor of love for him, ten years in the making. Sweeping, beautiful landscapes accompanied by the haunting score from composer John Barry. Pretty extensive & interesting documentary features on the special edition DVD. Co-starring Mary McDonnell and Graham Greene. 1990.

Domino
Gritty yet compelling story about bounty hunter Domino Harvey, the daughter of British actor Laurence Harvey. Keira Knightly, England’s Natalie Portman, illustrates why she’s already an Oscar nominee at age 20. This cautionary narrative is directed with typical colorful flair by Tony Scott (True Romance), who clearly has a Beverly Hills 90210 fetish. The movie not only boasts appropriately clever and self-deprecating cameos by Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering, but also features character actor/90210 alum Stanley Kamel. Screenplay by Richard Kelly, who wrote and directed the cult hit Donnie Darko. 2005.

Election *
Legally Blonde may have made Reese Witherspoon the star that she is today, but Election is clearly her best work. Alexander Payne directs this hysterical movie about Witherspoon’s overachieving high school student Tracy Flick, whose very existence annoys her teachers and fellow students to no end. Matthew Broderick plays pathetic quite convincingly, and is very similar to his character in You Can Count on Me. Co-starring Chris Klein. 1999.

Elizabeth *
I will always be bitter that Gwyneth Paltrow won Best Actress for Shakespeare in Love when Cate Blanchett was also nominated that year, and FAR outshined Paltrow in every conceivable way as Elizabeth I in this beautiful movie by Shekhar Kapur. Bitter, party of one. 1998.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind *
Easily makes my top 10 of all time. Jim Carrey is just not given enough credit for this performance (he was also terrific in The Truman Show, in my top 10 as well). He and Kate Winslet are perfectly matched in this strange love story by Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation, Being John Malkovich). With visually stunning direction from avant-garde director Michel Gondry (Bjork videos), this film requires more than one viewing to appreciate its creativity, sentiment and soul. 2004.

I expect great acting from Julianne Moore every time, but Dennis Quaid is a revelation in this film; his quiet, tortured and closeted husband is a heartbreaker. Todd Haynes directs this visually stunning independent film, also featuring standout performances by Dennis Haysbert and Patricia Clarkson. 2002.

One of my favorite movies of all time, for reasons I still have difficulty articulating. Written and directed by Zach Braff, this is an impressive debut for a television star with a relatively small big-screen résumé. There is a really nice sentiment about the film, and Braff gives a very subdued and appealing performance as Andrew Largeman. Natalie Portman radiates and steals the show; she is quirky and cute, and gives her character an irresistible charm and energy. Indie film It-Boy Peter Sarsgaard (Boys Don’t Cry, Shattered Glass, Kinsey) provides yet another solid supporting role. Co-starring Ian Holm. 2004.

Before she left on a Cruise, Katie Holmes was a charming actress on the rise. Director Doug Liman takes us on an entertaining journey through a poorly executed drug deal, with a great soundtrack and a loaded cast (Taye Diggs, Holmes, Jay Mohr, Timothy Olyphant, Sarah Polley, and Scott Wolf). Liman’s quick, signature style of direction works well in this movie, as it does with his other films: Swingers, The Bourne Identity and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Written by John August (Charlie’s Angels, Big Fish, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory). 1999.
The Godfather
The Godfather: Part II *
Clearly the best of the trilogy and possibly the best sequel ever made. Al Pacino has never been better, and yet he did not win Best Actor for his brilliant performance in this masterpiece. I was fortunate to attend a screening at Pixar (before the movie was released) for a charity event benefiting local schools. Wow. Lisa Kudrow is the most talented Friend. Her turn as an uptight, conservative sourpuss in this movie is fantastic. Written and directed by Don Roos, who gave us Single White Female but also Boys on the Side and Bounce. Clearly this man is in touch with his feminine
